Now Playing Tracks

A show next week I wanted to mention

There’s a band in Providence called BebeRequin. Its members are Matt Everett, Rachel Rosenkrantz Riemer, and (the most recent addition) Greg Motta. They formed about a year ago, and not long after they started playing they decided to invite some local acts whose music they enjoyed to do a show with them at the Salon. Those acts were Pete Avitable, Laila Aukee, Mark Milloff, and … me.

The show happened on January 13 at the Salon (a bar behind City Hall), and it was so much fun that I booked a follow-up show with the exact same lineup at AS220 a few months later, on April 7. At this show, Matt and Mark each sat in on a couple of songs during my set (a recording survives), and this in turn led to me asking Matt to be in my band, which ended up being Jacob Haller and the Silent Treatment. So by being picked to be in the original show, I’ve gotten to know some great musicians, had some good shows, and even got a band out of it. Quite a trip!

Next week, on Wednesday September 19, the same lineup is back at the Salon. This time there’s a twist — Rachel suggested that we try to write a song in the style of one of the other acts. So I’ve got a sort of raunchy slide guitar blues a la Mark Milloff planned, and I gather a couple of people have decided to write songs in the Jacob Haller style, which should be interesting, as I’m not sure what my style is. Maybe this will be the night I’ll find out …

September’s a month when I have a lot of shows going on, which is great, but it can lead to some shows falling through the cracks. I think this is going to be a fun one, though, and I like all of the other musicians who are playing, so I wanted to highlight it.

Here’s some videos of music by everyone:
